What is your search engine marketing goal?

If you're like most internet businesses, you probably started out thinking that the main search engine marketing goal was to bring in as many people as your could. Of course, this is true, but that's really the simplest thing to do. Bringing people to your site isn't the problem; it's getting the right people to your site that can be difficult.

In order to bring the kind of people to your site that you want (people that are interested in buying from you or working with you), you need to ask yourself a few questions:

* Who is my customer?

* What do they like?

* What do they want?

* What do they hate?

* Why are they looking at my business?

* What can I offer them?

Once you have refined whose attention you need to grab, it will be much easier to set up your search engine marketing strategy.

You've probably seen a web site that looked to be offering one thing, but in reality was offering another - that isn't fair to a customer. When you're trying to make money, you need to give your customer the information that they want first. If you're offering a certain product that should be the main thing that the customer will want to see when they come to your web site and that should be the focus of your search engine marketing.

If you've determined that your customer will want questions answered by your company, allow them to have those questions as the main portion of your web page - either in an easy FAQ or via articles that actually help the customer, rather than sell them anything. When you address the customer in these ways, your search engine marketing strategy is answering the questions that will probably be entered into a search engine - and you will be one of the sites that actually match their needs.

Of course, when you're looking to focus your search engine marketing on increasing your traffic, you might think that adding as many possible keywords is the best way to bring in a lot of people. However, this is just not the case. You need to pick the keywords that your customer will be using specifically, not just add any keyword that is not related.

This is called focusing your goal. And by that, you are creating a more refined set of customers that are looking at your site, rather than having people that aren't really interested in what you have to say or sell. Because in the end, your search engine marketing strategy needs to be about making profits.

Search engine marketing is about determining your real business goal and then making sure that everything on your web site is contributing to achieving that goal. It sounds simple and almost too easy, but it's really the best way to be honest and bring in the people that will really care about what you have to say. © 2006 Xybercode, Inc. All rights reserved.
